"So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
Matthew 7:12

If you have children, you have probably quoted this scripture a million times, “do to others what you would have them do to you”.  This verse is typically quoted in our house when someone in our family feels mistreated or misunderstood by either the outside world or each other.

Recently, this passage reminded me how to love someone through a difficult situation. God brings people into our lives to love and care for. But we can’t always relate to their situation or fully understand what they are going through.  God used this verse to show me the best way to love them is to put myself in their shoes and ask myself, “how would I want to be treated?” How would I want to be cared for?

This verse helped me shift my focus away from my thoughts and feelings regarding the situation and toward theirs. I have to say, walking out this truth is quite freeing. It also gives God all the glory and takes the pressure off me to have it all figured out.
