"But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all."
Isaiah 53:5-6

He was wounded because of our sin; His punishment brought us peace; by his wounds, we are healed. These contradictions are staggering; they’re irrational and unjust. We have all gone astray, and therefore we justly deserve being wounded, crushed, punished for our sin. Instead, we see here God’s heart and Jesus’ sacrifice for us all.

In the place where we stand condemned before God, Jesus’ sacrifice declares us innocent. The peace that He brings us is a reconciled relationship with God, an opportunity to be with God now and forever. His peace goes beyond anything in this world; it seeps into every part of our lives; it re-wires our thinking and priorities. His peace gives us the ability to withstand the storms in this life, through it all, knowing that God Himself has taken our place and done what we could never do. Truly, there is no more penalty left to bear for our sin.
