“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Matthew 7:24-27

I look around and see why we have so much brokenness in our world. We are told in 1 Peter 5: 8 that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. He manipulates and entices us away from God’s perfect plan in order to get his foot into the door of our lives. It can be done through a lustful thought that turns into an affair, a sip of alcohol that spirals back into addiction, or discontentment that leads to financial ruin. Whatever it is, the enemy is sly and cunning and will do whatever it takes to destroy you, your marriage, and your family. That’s why 1 Peter 5:9 goes on to say that we need to stand firm in our faith.

Matthew 7 tells us how to stand firm. It tells us to build our foundation on the rock (Jesus) by hearing God’s word and putting it into practice. He goes on to say the danger of dismissing God’s word and not applying it to your life. I’ve seen both played out. God wants to save us the headache of building on the sand.

It has been eight years since the flood of 2015 and you can still see empty slabs all throughout Wimberley where beautiful homes once stood. My prayer and hope is that when life hits, your foundation will be firmly planted on the rock.

If you are in desperate need of rebuilding your spiritual foundation, reach out to someone that knows Jesus. It’s never too late. God, show us the sin areas in our life that hinder us from hearing your word and putting it into practice? Help us to die to ourselves and submit to your good and perfect will. Amen.
