"Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away."
Mark 4:16-17

Living in the Hill Country of Texas, we can have a good understanding of the difficulty of growing things in rocky terrain. As a kid, I remember a friend and I having (what we thought was) a brilliant idea to dig our own swimming pool one summer day. After what felt like hours of digging, our swimming pool was approximately two feet wide, two feet long, and 6 inches deep. We hit rock; there was no digging deeper. Sometimes, God’s words are heard and received. However, when push comes to shove, the ways of the world (rocky soil) overcome the word of God. It is shallow soil.

Most of us experience or have experienced this type of heart condition. We hear of God or God’s instruction, receive it with joy, only for there to be no roots when trouble or persecution comes. God, in His omnipresence, doesn’t withhold. He still spreads the seeds generously. What does God’s generosity tell you about His character?
