"For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."
Psalm 139:13-16

Have you ever noticed how new parents tend to think their newborn is the most beautiful baby ever? It’s like we are predisposed to feel this way – I know for a fact that my babies were perfect and adorable from day one! This passage reflects the fact that God delighted in our unformed substance from conception. No matter the external circumstances that brought us into the world, we were God-planned and designed. We were on his creative mind. This knowledge is so reassuring when we’re prone to fall into comparisons – whether it’s physical attributes or gifts and talents. We are beautiful to God, and we each have purpose. Admittedly, I spent a lot of aimless years not recognizing this truth. Life is so much more fulfilling when we partner with God in serving our purposes here on earth and when we recognize that we are uniquely designed for them.

Father, we acknowledge your wonderful creative design and plan for our lives. Whether we are twenty years old with much life ahead of us, or… let’s just say, in the latter years of our time here…each day you ordained for us with intent and purpose, Lord. Help us to listen for your voice each day, saying, “This is the way, walk in it.”
