“O Lord, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all of my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O Lord. You hem me in – behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.”
Psalm 139:1-6

Oh that we would not let our familiarity with this Psalm cause us to brush over it in haste! David’s heartfelt meditation acknowledging God’s omnipresence and omniscience leads us to a place of awe and wonder at how deeply personal our God is. He KNOWS me. He KNOWS you…better than we know ourselves. The creator of this wonderful universe is also intimately acquainted with each of us…spirit, soul and body. Genesis 1:31 tells us that “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” These passages remind us that God created us with intent and individual purpose. His presence surrounds us all day, every day, and his hand of grace rests upon us.

Father, as David said so fittingly, your intimate acquaintance with us is too wonderful to fully comprehend, and yet, we receive this beautiful mystery today. May we go about this day in awareness of and fellowship with you, our Creator and the lover of our soul.
