A few weeks ago, one of our kids had an ailment that required an emergency room visit. Of course, it was on a Friday night when the emergency room was hustling and bustling. As we waited and received treatment, I watched patient after patient, nurse after nurse, doctor after doctor walk by meeting the needs. If one of our kids hadn’t needed emergency treatment, we would not have spent our evening in the Emergency Room. Jesus corrects the Pharisee’s misconceptions and judgments of those Jesus is dining with. Jesus came to “call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.” Reflect on your journey with Jesus, when has been a time that you have “dined” with Jesus? Is there somebody in your life who you can invite in?
“But when the teachers of religious law who were Pharisees saw him eating with tax collectors and other sinners, they asked his disciples, “Why does he eat with such scum? ” When Jesus heard this, he told them, “Healthy people don’t need a doctor—sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners.””
