"Be dressed ready for service and keep your lamps burning, like servants waiting for their master to return from a wedding banquet, so that when he comes and knocks they can immediately open the door for him. It will be good for those servants whose master finds them watching when he comes. Truly I tell you, he will dress himself to serve, will have them recline at the table and will come and wait on them."
Luke 12:35-37

This parable is about Jesus’ return, and because we don’t know the time or day of His return, we are to remain watchful.

I think of different ways we are watchful. We watch our bank accounts so that we can manage our finances well. When we are in public places, we watch our kids closely. We might watch for sales or business opportunities. Regardless of what we are watching, it requires diligence.

As I personally anticipate the Lord’s return, I can’t help but ask myself if I’m remaining steadfast in my faith. Am I making the most of every opportunity? Am I being intentional in my conversations and time? I can’t say that I always am. I am thankful for this reminder as we wrap up summer and go into the fall.

Lord, may our actions always represent a watchful heart. Help us to stay on guard and not get distracted from the calling on our life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
