Family should be fun! As believers in Jesus Christ, we are not going to live life the way the world does. We are going to be set apart…different. We should be! That’s a good thing! God’s Word says to be in the world, but not of it. However, this can sometimes mean skipping out on fun events, social gatherings, worldly traditions that aren’t best.
We’ve had to have this conversation with our kids’ multiple times and it can be hard. They feel like they are missing out or that they are different. To which we respond, you are different and that is a good thing! But just because you feel like you are “missing out” doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. In times when, as parents, we must give a hard “no”, we sometimes replace it with a fun “yes”! Our “yes” can look many different ways. Sometimes it’s saying yes to a new privilege, a similar but better experience, or planning an inexpensive getaway or day trip. Be creative! Being a Christian doesn’t mean we can’t have fun. If family is fun our kids will want to stick around. There are plenty of things we can say yes to that will create lifelong memories!
