When I think of “old yeast” I think about my ego and its incessant desire to keep me from trusting God and go the way of the world. It never gives up because the desires of my old nature have their roots in the lust of my flesh, the lust of my eyes, and the pride of life. The good news is that when I started following Jesus and believing in His way, He gave me the power of the Holy Spirit and a new, divine nature that empowers me to say no to my ego. Now I can deactivate the beliefs that were conditioned in me by the influence of my former way of life and renew my mind with thoughts of mercy, grace, and righteousness. The result is that my life is much simpler, my choices are fewer and my one desire is to abide in Christ and flow with His Word that lives in me.
“Get rid of the old yeast, so that you may be a new unleavened batch—as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.”
1 Corinthians 5:7
“You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds; and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.”
Ephesians 4:22-24
