“For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I am not a part of the body,” it is not for this reason any the less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the sense of smell be? But now God has placed the members, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired.”
1 Corinthians 12:14-18

As each of us learns to yield to the Spirit through operating more and more in our gifting, we undoubtedly become increasingly aware of the beauty within God’s design. We see our contribution and that of others toward the cause of Christ working together for the good of the world around us to the Glory of God! If we keep our head on a swivel as we seek to honor God in our lives and gifting, we will continue to awaken to the accomplishment of all the good works that God has placed before us…each person administering the grace of God according to the empowerment of the Holy Spirit through their gifts.

When I read 1 Cor 12: 14-18, not only am I enthralled by all of the aforementioned, but I am also reminded of a secondary message that, though inferred through explaining the primary meaning, is no less compelling. In addition to learning to appreciate the importance of each role in the body of Christ (particularly our own), we learn here not to envy. If I spend all my time wondering and worrying about why or why not I have this or that gift rather than that of my brother or sister in Christ, I will become most comprehensively useless in disseminating the love of God as he intends through the use of my gifting. So it is for us a specific calling in our lives to be precisely who God created us to be…yielded to the Spirit, grounded in love, devoted to the message of Jesus, and free from the desire to be anything other than who God has created us to be!
