When you take refuge in something physical, you are trusting it will take care of you or at least make you feel safe and secure. When we take refuge in God, we are choosing to trust Him instead. It’s so easy to put our trust in things that can make us feel safe and secure like our home, bank account, job, new vehicle, our comfort zone, or what others think or say about us. The list goes on and on. However, God says that it is better to take refuge in Him. People come and go. Everything we own could be gone in a second. It is all unpredictable and unsatisfying. The refuge that God provides is consistent, readily available, safe, peaceful, and satisfying. God is a place of security and rest. Trusting Him allows us to bypass our artificial trusts with authentic trusts.
“It’s better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in man.”
Psalm 118:8 (ESV)
