In Acts 20:4–6, we read what might seem like a simple travel log, a list of names, places, and timelines. And if we’re honest, it’s easy to skim over these kinds of details. If we slow down, we see that within these details is a powerful picture of how God’s work actually moves forward.
Paul was not alone. In fact, Paul was rarely alone on his missionary journeys. Only when he was in prison! Here in Acts 20, Paul had Sopater, Aristarchus, Secundus, Gaius, Timothy, Tychicus, and Trophimus as his companions. These were men from different cities and backgrounds traveling together for the sake of the gospel. Some went ahead. Others joined later. Each played a part. The mission advanced not through one prominent leader, but through a community of faithful people moving in unity and purpose.
This passage reminds us that God’s kingdom is built through shared obedience. Not everyone preaches. Not everyone leads. Some prepare the way. Some wait faithfully. Some simply show up when and where they’re needed. But every role matters.
Sometimes our walk with Christ feels ordinary. We may feel like a supporting character rather than the main one. But this passage assures us: there are no small roles in God’s mission. Every day faithfulness—showing up, serving, encouraging, and waiting is part of something much bigger than we can see.
