“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”
Ephesians 5:21

When I read this verse, my mind immediately jumps to the “submit” word.  In reality, I think the word “reverence” is even more important. Reverence is defined as a ‘feeling or attitude of deep respect, love, and awe, as for something sacred.’  If you start with that powerful word, the question then becomes “Out of respect, love, and awe for Jesus, what would I be willing to do?”

Because of my love and awe of Jesus, I should be gladly willing to submit to others in my life…others including my spouse, my parents, and my employer.  As we look at the verses in the coming days regarding submission, we need to keep in mind that we are first called to submit to one another. The bible is clear that putting other’s needs before our own and living as a servant are powerful postures to take in relationships.

What makes it difficult for you to submit to others? Whatever your answer, remember that you are submitting for Jesus’ sake, not the other person’s.
