"7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the Lord directs his love, at night his song is with me—a prayer to the God of my life."
Psalm 42:7-8

Verse 7 shows some deep imagery that even bible commentaries don’t agree on what exactly is being communicated. One group would say that the waterfalls and waves sweeping over him reflects troubles and hardship that feel as if they never end, constantly crashing into him. Another group would say that it is referencing God’s love for us in the midst of hardships doing the same thing, roaring and constantly sweeping over us.

Regardless of which camp you find yourself in, I think both can be true. We can feel overwhelmed and heavy and, at the same time, be reminded of and surrounded by God’s love. Our emotions and circumstances don’t dictate God’s goodness. Instead, God’s goodness gives us a peace and a hope in spite of our emotions and circumstances.
