“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.”
Mark 12: 29-30

There are a LOT of rules in the Old Testament of the Bible.  Evidently, there are 613 laws found in the Torah, the first five books of the Bible.  Ten of those get elevated to Commandments and given to Moses directly from God.  So, it is significant that Jesus is willing to narrow this long list to “the most important one”.

By first recognizing that there is one true God, we are then told to love Him with all of our being – all our hearts, all our soul, all of our mind, and all of our strength.  Is there anything in your life that you love with all of your being?  As for me, I love my family.  I think about them all the time.  I want to spend time with them whenever I can.  I sacrifice for them.  I am so grateful for them.  And in this most important commandment, Jesus is saying to me, “you should love God this way – wholeheartedly like you love your family, and more”.

Just because Jesus simplifies it, that does not make it easy.  Loving God with all we have will take time, practice, intentionality, and discipline.  The good news is that any love you give to God will be returned to you tenfold from the love you receive from God.
