Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
Psalm 23:4

Whenever I get overwhelmed trying to understand God and what it means to be His child, I turn to His promises. The promise that the Lord will be with me is one that He tells me repeatedly throughout scripture.

The words in verse 4 of Psalm 23 confront the reality of living in a broken world – I will walk through dark valleys, and there is evil lurking. But I do not walk alone. As we’ve read in the previous verses of Psalm 23, I have a shepherd who intimately knows me and directs my paths, and He is there in the dark valleys to comfort me. And I fear no evil because God has made a way for me, through Jesus, to have the ultimate safety and security of eternal life with Him.

These are profound truths, but the knowledge of Him simply being “with me” makes them so much more tangible. This is a truth to hold on to, tightly.
