So much of this week’s devotions have focused on what we do in private, behind closed doors. Proverbs 27:19 says “As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person.” Proverbs 27:19. We can try to hide, attempt to cover up, or create false narratives about our lives, but the truth will always prevail. What is inside of our hearts will eventually bubble up into all areas of our lives. God doesn’t demand perfection from us but instead always our transformation to be more like him on this side of Heaven. How relieving! Take some time now or later to honestly answer these questions— When in private, do my thoughts reflect His? Do my actions reflect who God is? How can I clothe myself in humility to be like Christ? Remember, perfection isn’t the goal. Becoming more like Jesus is.
““And when you fast, don’t make it obvious, as the hypocrites do, for they try to look miserable and disheveled so people will admire them for their fasting. I tell you the truth, that is the only reward they will ever get. But when you fast, comb your hair and wash your face. Then no one will notice that you are fasting, except your Father, who knows what you do in private. And your Father, who sees everything, will reward you.”
