Sometimes when I see or hear the word love, I have mixed feelings as to what I think about it. We say we love things like tacos or a certain color or sport or job or animal or type of clothing. Then, sometimes in the same breath say we love God, the creator of Heaven and Earth. Here, this word love is better defined as agape love “to wish well to, take pleasure in, long for, esteem.” Jesus, as he spoke to his disciples, articulates the type of agape love that we, as followers of Jesus, are to have for others. To wish well for others, to take pleasure in, to long for, to esteem. As followers of Jesus, this type of brotherly/sisterly love sets us apart from other types of love in the world. Agape love forces us to set aside our ego and our own agendas, fix our eyes on Jesus and wish well for those around us.
