Jesus’ prayer, shortly before He went to the cross, included an appeal for all of His disciples to be in unity with His Father, just as He was. Today, many people find unity in what they believe about God, but by doing that they only come into agreement with other people who believe the same doctrines and forms of worship. There is only one way followers of Christ will become one with the Father the way Jesus was in unity with Him. Absolute surrender to God’s will brings us into unity with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. When we are unified with them we will be in harmony with all other believers who are in complete submission to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It won’t matter if your theological beliefs about God differ as long as you are abiding in Him and His word is abiding in you. When we are loving each other the way Christ loved the church and bearing the fruit of the Holy Spirit we will experience heaven on earth.
“I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”
1 Corinthians 1:10
“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”
John 17:20-21
