Have you ever been a part of a plan or project that ran so smoothly, where the group worked well together and goals were achieved? You could have been on a job or sports team, or you may have been blessed to experience this in your family life as each member helped and supported one another to see game plans for the day accomplished. On the other hand, we’ve also experienced what it’s like when things don’t go well, where there’s confusion in roles and people acting in their own best interest. In these instances, the outcome often falls short of the original goal, and people can be left hurt, disappointed, and undoubtedly weary from the struggle.
As disciples of Christ, our goal is found in the Great Commission where Jesus told us to “Go therefore, and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to follow all that I commanded you; and behold I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20. Advancing the kingdom is the goal and Jesus is our leader. When we keep our eyes on Him, we are actually able to accomplish far more than we can imagine. It’s a simple task, really. We tend to complicate things though with our own ideas and egos.
In the church, we all serve in different roles, each one as vital as the other. To see Christ made known, we must first be willing to get in the game, to serve and contribute. We are not alone in this journey. We are part of a larger body, each playing a unique role but all working towards the same goal. A key to serving with humility and unity of purpose is valuing our brothers and sisters and seeing them through Christ’s eyes of love. Discovering our assignments in God’s work can be an adventure.
