The Israelites had the same problem we have. Though hearing, they didn’t really. What was to land on their hearts, somehow got stuck in their ears.
Jesus spent significant time teaching about our hearing problem (think Parable of the Sower, Matthew 13:1ff). HEAR, O Israel…Don’t miss this one.
One time Jesus quoted this verse to answer an “expert” lawyer’s (trick) question: “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Being the author of life, Jesus added something that was possibly for this lawyer’s mindset (and mine). “Love the Lord your God with all your MIND.”
Heart, soul, mind, and strength pretty much wraps up the makeup of a human being. This is what/who I am. This is what I am responsible for. I relate to God emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically. These are the aspects of me that God loves and wants love from.
Does that sound complicated? It’s really not. The Lord our God is ONE. There is only one God and his three aspects (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) are wrapped into one. I am heart, soul, mind and strength, but those aspects are one person.
The greatest commandment is simply me and God loving each other with all we are.
How does that sound?
