Do you know how small a mustard seed is? I was curious and did a quick Google search… it’s only 1-2 millimeters in diameter and one of the smallest seeds on the planet. However, when it grows, a mustard tree can grow as tall as 20 to 30 feet high. Why did Jesus use the mustard seed as His comparison to the Kingdom of Heaven?
There can be several takeaways from this parable. But as I reflected, what stood out to me was the stark difference between the small beginning of the seed and the eventual growth into a tree. Jesus is trying to convey to the crowd listening that while it may seem small and insignificant from outward appearance, the Kingdom of Heaven will go on to grow, flourish, and influence the world.
What Jesus was teaching through this parable then is relevant and applicable to us now. Sometimes, we may underestimate the impact of our seemingly small acts of faith. We might question whether our prayers matter or if our efforts make a difference. However, this parable reminds us that even the tiniest seed can grow into a great tree. Likewise, our small acts of faith, when rooted in Christ, have the potential to bear fruit and impact the lives of those around us.
Let’s not lose hope in our seemingly small actions in our walk with God. Through prayer, studying His Word, and spending time with Him daily, the Lord will nurture our faith, and we will surely see His power at work in us and through us.
