“All the believers were together and had everything in common.”
Acts 2:44

In a world that prizes individuality and personal ownership, the picture painted in Acts 2:44 can seem foreign, even radical. The early church, freshly empowered by the Holy Spirit, didn’t just meet for worship; they lived in a profound state of unity. They shared their lives, their meals, and their possessions. The community’s collective resources met their needs because they were deeply connected. They had everything in common.

This verse isn’t a command to sell our homes and give away all our money, but a beautiful illustration of the heart of Christian community. It speaks to a deep trust and belonging from a shared relationship with Jesus. When Christ is at the center, our differences and personal agendas fade, and we begin to see ourselves not as isolated individuals but as members of one body.

What would it look like for us to have “everything in common” today? It begins with a shift in perspective. It means holding our possessions, time, and talents with an open hand, ready to be used for the good of others. It means being present in each other’s lives, celebrating joys, and shouldering burdens. It means recognizing that our resources are not just for our comfort, but for the edification of the entire body of Christ.

Let’s pray for a heart that is less concerned with accumulating and more concerned with sharing. Let’s ask God to show us how we can live out this radical unity, becoming a people who truly have everything in common, reflecting our Savior’s generous and unifying love to a world desperately in need.
