Wow, there isn’t an ounce of darkness in God. Not even an ounce. If we proclaim to be a follower of Christ but live in darkness this verse says that we are liars. That might sound harsh to you but I am thankful that God doesn’t beat around the bush. To live in darkness is to live a life that is characterized by sin while actively rejecting God’s truth. Darkness says, I love Jesus but I’m going to live and do as I please. If you are struggling with living in darkness I would strongly encourage you to tell a fellow believer that can help keep you accountable. There is power in bringing our sin into the light. I would also encourage you to read Psalms 51. In my bible this passage is marked as a “prayer of repentance”. King David had just sinned against God with Bathsheba and was crying out for forgiveness. God says, He will purify us from all sin. As believers that’s what we want. To be purified through His death on the cross and to live in the light.
"This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin."
