"But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful."
Luke 6:35-36

Sometimes a parent has done something very harmful to their children. Their actions are inexcusable and there may be a lot of distance between the parent and child. Nevertheless, Paul tells us that love does not dishonor others. Love keeps no record of wrongs. You can honor the position of a parent without approving of their unhealthy choices or destructive behavior.

Sometimes, the highest form of honor is praying for their healing from a healthy distance, breaking generational cycles of trauma, and speaking of them with grace rather than malice. It isn’t easy being in the presence of someone who has hurt you deeply, but no matter how much they have done wrong, God’s mercy for them is our greatest example to emulate.

Affirmation:

I will endeavor to love my enemies, bless those who curse me, do good to those who hurt me and pray for those who persecute me.
