The first four commandments address our relationship with God. The last five address our relationships with people. Between these two groups of commandments is one that binds them together. It is the first commandment with a promise, and it teaches us about how to relate to God from a human perspective.
The way we honor our parents is how we will honor God. They are our first representation of authority, provision and protection. He is the one who chose our parents for us and, through them, gave us life on this planet. No matter how they treated us and cared for us, they did not abort us. We are indebted to them for our existence.
The promise associated with this command is that we will live a long life in the land God gave us. Therefore, as we learn how to honor our parents, we will also discover how to honor God and our fellow human beings.
Affirmation:
By God’s grace, I will learn what it means to honor my father and mother so that I may honor God and people.
