Treasures refer to the precious and valuable things that are stored in protected places so that they will be as secure as possible. Jesus reminds us that the elements and evil people prey on these things.
I remember reading a story about a couple who had retired and moved to South Texas in 1980. They had $300,000.00 in an unregulated savings and loan bank. One day, they went to get some money out, and the facility was closed. Similar stories happened all over the United States in the late 1980’s. It is referred to as the S&L Crisis.
There are many other examples of people who thought they were wealthy one day and discovered they had nothing the next day. Their treasure was in earthly things.
I can remember when Howard Hughes, one of the wealthiest men in the world, died. Someone asked, “How much did he leave behind?” His friend replied, “All of it!”
When Job lost everything, he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will depart. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; may the name of the LORD be praised.” Job 1:21
Jesus practiced His own words, “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” His heart was in heaven, and that’s where ours needs to be.
Paul said, “Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.” Col. 3:1
