As a young Christian, I once attended a church where the pastor trained the congregation to stand up and applaud when the offering was collected. I found out later that it was because of this passage. He wanted the people to give cheerfully.
It’s interesting to note that this passage instructs the people to be led by their hearts in deciding what to give. The idea is that those who choose to give little will also reap likewise, whereas those who give generously will receive more. People who are reluctant to give should not be pressured or manipulated.
Generosity is not listed as a fruit of the Spirit, yet it is a positive act of kindness and demonstrates the goodness of the Lord. Therefore, if one has to choose between generosity or greed, the proper way of the Lord will be to always err on the side of generosity.
