Paul was fighting a battle he couldn’t win until he finally surrendered to the very Person he was fighting. Transformation often begins the moment we stop resisting and start asking, “Who are you, Lord?”
After four months of Bob Stewart sharing his faith with me at work, I asked him if Linda and I could come over to his home to visit. On the evening of November 4th, 1964, he and his wife warmly welcomed us into their home. After visiting with them for an hour, answering our questions and listening to them share their stories of following Jesus, Bob suggested that we should get down on our knees and pray. He and his wife prayed, and then I was shocked when I heard my wife pray a beautiful prayer. In all of our time together, we had never prayed.
When my turn came to pray, there was a deafening silence. I didn’t know what to say. After what seemed like a minute of quiet thoughts going through my head, I blurted out something like, “Lord, I’ve made a mess of my life, and I need help. Please come into my life and help me change.” That was it. All of a sudden, I felt a heavy weight lifted off my shoulders, and a strange feeling of peace came over me.
When Linda and I left Bob and Peggy’s home that night, I knew something powerful had happened to me, and I began following Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. My life and our marriage were rescued. As we drove home, we had a strong hope that everything would change, and it did. That was over sixty years ago, and God has been shining His light in us more and more brightly.
