Jesus set us free in order for us to stay free. It’s a simple thing to say, but difficult to live out. I can see dozens of things daily that compete for my attention, affection, and energy. Things that ignite a spiral of competition, comparison, pride, self-pity, and self-focus. Things that steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10) my freedom in Christ.
When I remember what it feels like to be trying to perform my way back to God, I’m more likely to pause and consider my current decisions, thoughts, and heart attitudes ahead of time. The trouble is, the “yoke” gets put on slowly. The beginning is small, it’s a slow drift away from the freedom that comes with being secure, hopeful, and sure of where God has me and how He made me. Instead, only “faith working through love” counts for anything (Galatians 5:6). Placing full faith in God’s steadfast love for me; love that has the power to move through me into the way I serve others.
You and I were called to freedom in Christ, are we running well?
