My mom is a very gifted healthcare worker with a passion for cardiology. Being her daughter, I’ve had the opportunity to learn just how important taking care of the heart is. She spends her days helping people get their hearts healthy and functioning as they should. Medically, the study and care of the heart is a serious business; every organ and body function is affected by it. Knowing this, it’s no wonder that Scripture places the protection of our spiritual hearts in such high regard. In our walk with Jesus, the heart is where life comes from and where we connect with our Creator. If my heart connects me to Jesus, I want it to be on guard at all costs. The Lord constantly reminds me to throw off everything that hinders my closeness to Himself.
Picture a water supply that a town or village depends on; if the water gets poisoned at the source, it is poisoned everywhere else it flows. Our hearts function in the same way. If the source gets poisoned, everything is poisoned. With Jesus, we can have bountiful springs flowing from our hearts. We can be a fountain to those around us, not a drain. If you don’t know what to guard your heart from, ask Jesus. He is faithful in bringing things to light in his timing. I truly believe that when we allow God to protect our hearts with his commands, he is faithful to bring beautiful, refreshing streams overflowing into every other aspect of our lives.
