My husband and I grew up in a small suburb of Houston and began dating in high school. We married in 1980, had two sons, and attended the church I’d grown up in. When the boys were young, we discovered Wimberley. Our desire to leave city life led us to purchase land and attempt to move here. We had even begun building a small cabin on our property. But our plans very quickly fell apart. Disappointed, we sold the land, and the dream was forgotten. Several years later, through a series of events, Wimberley was brought to the forefront again. It was on our hearts, but we didn’t want to go through what we had years earlier. So in January of ’98, we began doing something that we sadly had not done much of before. My husband and I began to pray together, on our knees, each evening for God’s direction about a move. In less than a month, every door began to swing widely open. We loaded up, left all of our extended family behind, and moved here by August of that year. We discovered Cypress Creek Church a few months later, and God’s movement through this church changed my family’s lives.
As I look back on that time, I realize that while we thought we were just seeking God about a physical move, we were actually, quite simply…seeking God, Himself. When I compare the two attempts to make our move here, the only difference was prayer. We wanted God to be in it, or we didn’t want it. And boy did he answer! My walk before that had been very weak, and my prayer life was the same. I had found salvation in Christ, but knew nothing of embracing him as Lord and Master or the transformative power of the Holy Spirit. He was there all along, patiently waiting for me to ask.
While the above Scripture brought this part of my life’s story to mind, I firmly believe it speaks to all our endeavors. Everything we have or build means nothing without Jesus. Is there anything you’re building today without welcoming His presence in it? A move, a career, a family?
