This bold commission delivers our marching orders. History bears out that the early disciples took it that way. Scripture is clear that we also can take it personally. Jesus, the I AM of God, intended his followers, to the end of the age, to take this challenge personally. He clearly has the authority over all creation to give the directive. And because of that authority he gives this instruction:
- Go and make disciples. The Greek reads literally, “therefore, having gone…” It assumes the going more than commands the going. It is just what is naturally expected from a Jesus follower. Of course we will go. And the sense is “as you go”…disciple. Wherever you go…disciple. The word “make” is not in the original but “disciple” is used as a verb. To be a disciple is to To be a trainee is to be a trainer. We learn as a lifestyle; we teach as a lifestyle…as we carry out whatever assignment King Jesus gives us.
- To all nations. I am in charge of heaven and earth and “you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
- Teach people to follow my teaching and immerse them into their new life before others. It matters.
And then look at how he concludes this most critical directive: And Surely. And behold…LOOK! Pay attention to this part: “I am with you always, to the completion of time.” The I AM who is always, always is with you…to the very end.
He abides always. You belong, always.
“Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit.” (John 15:5). It’s not that Jesus needs you to help him reach the world. He can bear fruit without you, but BEHOLD what you would miss out on. “And surely, I will be with you.” He is moving into the mission.
