“You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die.  But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:6-8

There is so much in this passage it’s hard to know where to start.  So, let me just bullet some points and try to personalize it a bit:

  • At JUST the right time. The exact Kairos moment of opportunity…my powerlessness. It wouldn’t pay for him to come when I am powerful. The seed (word) would fall on the hard path of my arrogant confidence and would not penetrate my toughened heart.
  • The first 3 chapters of Romans gives convincing evidence of the fact that “there ain’t nobody righteous…no uno!”
  • Who would die for and unrighteous, ungodly person? Ah oh. We have a problem.
  • I perhaps might possibly dare to die (maybe/maybe not) for a good man if they promise to put my name in the paper postmortem.
  • BUT GOD. He shows up, at just the right time, in order to put action to his love for me (ok, for us) in this: While I was still a sinner, Christ died for me…and you.
  • Thank God he didn’t wait for my act to be together. He would still be waiting.

Back up a few verses for the conclusion:

Therefore, since (insert your name) has been justified through his/her tiny bit of faith, he/she has peace with God through his/her Lord Jesus Christ, through whom he/she has gained access by faith into grace in which he/she now stands. (Romans 5:1-2)

My sin, his death, my faith, his grace…peace.  I belong. And so do you.
